Five Things Unruh is Thankful For: From Desk to Dog

Happy Thanksgiving! You can’t have “the most wonderful time of the year” without friends and/or family at Thanksgiving. Unruh is particularly fond of this holiday – we spend all year building the centerpiece for such a special feast. Lest you think cornucopia, we’re talking about a centerpiece for your dining room set: a high-quality, handcrafted wood table.

Over the last few weeks, we discussed three specific tables, in a three-part series, to prepare your home for the holidays. More recently, we focused on the importance of “lounging” and how to rest well while enjoying Unruh furniture, friends and family at the same time. If you’re in need of a holiday boost or know someone who deserves high-quality furniture as a gift, let’s make it happen! To set up your showroom visit after Thanksgiving is easy – we’d love to see you.

In the meantime, here are five things Unruh is thankful for this season. Some are related to us as a company and some are just about life in general as we celebrate this week. Time goes by fast – holidays like these are how we slow down every once in a while to realize all of our blessings.

1. Home

How could home not be number one? And when we say “home” we mean that in two ways: all of our respective homes we get to enjoy over Thanksgiving, and our Unruh Furniture home. If you are celebrating this Thanksgiving indoors in a warm setting with a mouth-watering menu, consider yourself lucky. Many people don’t have the same opportunity, but there are many ways you can help others experience “home” this year. Consider giving to a cause!

As for the Unruh Furniture home, we’ve written about and celebrated this space in the past. But we really are just getting started at our church on Walnut. If you haven’t stopped by, we would love to show you our space and discuss your future furniture needs.

2. Apple Pie

We could devote a singular blog post and debate “which pie is best?” But take our word for it . . . Apple Pie takes the cake. (If that’s even possible).

Take the Pumpkin Pie for example. The Pumpkin Pie is really hard to perfect. It’s either very good or pretty mediocre. Congratulations if someone in your family has mastered this symbol of the season, because it’s easier said than done. However, no one has ever been upset to see an Apple Pie cross their threshold for a Thanksgiving buffet. It’s classic, simple, delicious and paired with a scoop of vanilla ice cream . . . game over.

3. Handcrafted Furniture

Alright, back to the stuff you set your plate full of pie on: our livelihood. (At least, in a vocational sense). Every day, our team of expert carpenters wakes up and drives to this home we love so that your family can benefit for generations to come. Handcrafted wood – real wood – is harder to acquire these days than you might think.

And we have options – queen size bed frames, home office furniture, farm table, small computer desk – to fit any of your home needs. Unfortunately, our society is lately leaning on a little more novelty to satisfy wants. Unruh believes in making beautiful, long-lasting furniture so that you receive a work of art to cherish for a lifetime.

4. Long Walks

This one might come out of left field, but long walks are an added bonus to any Thanksgiving or Christmas morning. Have to burn some calories beforehand, right?

In all seriousness, walks are a great way to clear your mind. Enjoy a long walk by yourself to think and enjoy nature alone, or invite some family members to join (and leave your phones behind)! Going on a walk is a fantastic way to see your city and surrounding neighborhoods. Driving somewhere doesn’t present the same opportunity to slow down and appreciate where you are in the moment. Therefore, carve out some time to walk this Thanksgiving break. And consider a new habit for your routine throughout the year.

5. Our Dog, Pete

Did you know Unruh has a shop dog? Well we do, and his name is Pete. But don’t think of him as our “mascot” because Pete is a part of our family.

We found him through the Kansas City Pet Project, which is an amazing nonprofit matching pets with their owners across the metro and beyond. If you already have a dog, then you know the special bond that is formed with “man’s best friend.” Our relationship with Pete is no different. Some days we walk into the shop overwhelmed or tired, but Pete meets us wherever we’re at and loves us all the same.

Are there more things we’re thankful for? Absolutely. But we also value your time. If you’re tucked away somewhere reading this blog post, and family is waiting on your presence . . . close out this window and go spend some time with the ones you love. Let’s not just talk about our thankfulness this holiday season – let’s show others with our actions what they mean to us.

Come visit us and bring a friend. Bake someone an Apple Pie, go on a long walk or visit the good people at the KC Pet Project. And we hope time slows down in your home to enjoy many blessings.

Unruh is counting ours. We look forward to building more of yours.
